Actions for the week

Monday

Tell Lamar Smith Oppose Trump’s Dangerous Cuts to Weather Forecasting and Climate Data

The Trump Administration plans to cut the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration by 17 percent next year. Included in that cut is a 22-percent cut to NOAA’s satellite data division. These cuts continue the Smith/Trump assault on climate science—Smith has repeatedly targeted NOAA in sham hearings designed to undermine public confidence in climate science, which just happens to threaten the revenues of his campaign donors in the fossil fuel industry.

These cuts not only threaten long-term monitoring of climate change—they also threaten our ability to predict and respond to extreme weather events and provide good forecasts that help businesses keep costs down. Ninety percent of the information for weather forecasts comes from satellites.

Other deep cuts included in this proposed cut include a 26-percent cut to the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, which runs climate.gov.

Action: Call Lamar Smith, Ted Cruz, and John Cornyn, and tell them to oppose Trump’s dangerous cuts to weather forecasting and climate data.

Lamar Smith – DC: 202-225-4236
San Antonio: 210-821-5024
Austin: 512-912-7508
Kerrville: 830-896-0154
Fax: 202-225-8628

Cruz – DC: (202) 224-5922
Austin: (512) 916-5834
San Antonio: 210-340-2885

Cornyn – DC: (202) 224-2934
Austin: (512) 469-6034
San Antonio: 210-224-7485
Houston: (713) 572-3337

Also, be sure to ask your state representatives to oppose SB6, Dan Patrick’s “bathroom bill.” Here’s a great script courtesy of Indivisible Txlege. You can find your state reps with this tool: http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/Home.aspx.

Hello, I’m calling to ask my Senator/Representative to vote NO on SB6. This legislation is not actually about public safety; it discriminates against transgendered people and would inhibit their participation in public life. We trust our teachers and principals who know our kids to make the appropriate accommodations for their students and keep them safe. A blanket law that prohibits student accommodations wrongly takes those decisions out of our teachers’ hands.

And I know Senator Kolkhorst and Dan Patrick are trying to sell this to the public as a “public safety” measure, but outlawing transgender people from using the bathroom of the gender with which they identify doesn’t make anyone safer. Transgender Texans have been using bathrooms for years with no reports of them doing anything inappropriate in those spaces. This bill is a “solution” in search of a problem. Thank you for your time.

Tuesday

If you can make it to the capital to testify against SB6 in person, then do so today!

Also, call your Lamar Smith, Ted Cruz, and John Cornyn and tell them how much you value the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). In 2016, the NEA and NEH each requested $148 million – less than 1/100th of a percent of the $4 trillion federal budget. But we get an amazing amount of value for those dollars. The NEA and NEH provide grants for libraries and museums, provide training programs for teachers, and support arts therapy programs for veterans.

These aren’t champagne parties for the New York art world. These are real educational resources that ordinary people use every day.

Here in TX 21, the NEA and NEH support:

  • Admiral Nimitz Foundation (Fredericksburg)
  • Austin ISD
  • Austin History Center Association
  • Austin Public Library
  • Bandera Public Library
  • Blanco Library
  • Bulverde Spring Branch Library
  • German-Texan Heritage Society
  • Gillespie County Historical Society
  • McNay Art Museum (San Antonio)
  • Mexic-Arte Museum (Austin)
  • St. Edward’s University
  • Witte Museum (San Antonio)

Trump’s first budget would eliminate funding for these programs and many more. It’s a classic case of Republicans funding their pet projects on the backs of our children’s education.

Wednesday

The Republican ACA bill gets committee votes. Make sure you request that Lamar Smith, Ted Cruz, and John Cornyn oppose the bill until it has been marked up by the Congressional Budget Office and they have concluded that it will cover as many or more people as the ACA.

Thursday

Stand Up to Attacks on Clean Air and Water

Trump is proposing a 25-percent funding cut to the Environmental Protection Agency, would include a 3,000-job slash to the EPA’s staff. These cuts include a 70-percent cut to the climate protection budget and the virtual elimination of the Great Lakes Restoration and environmental justice programs. The proposed cuts set off panic among EPA staff. They need to see us standing up for them.

As S. William Becker at the National Association of Clean Air Agencies said, “These cuts, if enacted by Congress, will rip the heart and soul out of the national air pollution control program and jeopardize the health and welfare of tens of millions of people around the country.”

Action: Call Lamar Smith, Ted Cruz, and John Cornyn and tell them to protect our air and water by opposing Trump’s ridiculous cuts to environmental protection. (See above for phone numbers)

Monday Update

There is so much going on – the resistance is active and engaged! I’m going to list a bunch of different things you might do today – bite off what you can chew, we don’t want anybody burning out. This is a marathon not a sprint!

ACTIONS
1) If you have pictures showing the crowd from Saturday’s ATX or SA town halls and are on twitter, then make sure to tweet them out and tag @LamarSmithTX21

2) If you have one of the Lamar Smith missing signs or see one out, grab a picture and tweet it – tag @LamarSmithTX21, @KXAN_NEWS, @KVUE, @JTiloveTX, and @maddow . Let’s get some media attention on those!

3) There are a bunch of issues coming up this week. It is fine to make multiple requests in a single call. (See the bottom of this post for phone numbers)

– MOST IMPORTANT: Tomorrow morning the House Judiciary Committee votes on a resolution (H. Res 111) requiring Attorney General Jeff Sessions to release documents related to corruption by Trump or his cronies, including ties to foreign governments. Lamar Smith is on this committee, please call and ask him to a) co-sponsor the bill, and b) vote FOR it.

– If you haven’t asked Lamar Smith, Ted Cruz, and John Cornyn to oppose ACA repeal then please do so now.

– The Senate will be voting on Seema Verma to lead the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This is the kind of appointment that largely flies under the radar but can have a huge impact on the lives of many people. Vera, for examples, opposes mandating maternity coverage in insurance plans. Call Cruz and Cornyn and ask them to oppose this extreme nominee. You can find more information here – https://goo.gl/LyTyMM

Small Acts of Resistance

Resistance comes in many forms, some big and some small.

I don’t know if you heard, but last night a mosque was burned down in Victoria, TX. The cause isn’t known, but it was striking that this happened just hours after Trump signed an executive order banning immigrants – including refugees fleeing wars – from several predominantly Muslim countries. So if you’re up for a small act of resistance today then you might throw some money to the effort to rebuild the mosque (https://www.gofundme.com/victoria-islamic-center-rebuilding). We cannot let hate rule the day.

Other small acts of resistance that can be very meaningful over the long term include setting up a recurring donation of whatever you can afford to the ACLU (https://www.aclu.org/), the Council on American-Islamic Relations (https://www.cair.com/), or the International Rescue Committee (https://www.rescue.org/).

Keep the Pressure On: Tell Congress to #ProtectOurCare.

One of President Trump’s first acts in office was to sign an Executive Order that could threaten essential components of the Affordable Care Act. But to dismantle the ACA, Trump will need to get repeal legislation through Congress. Keep the pressure on your members of Congress! Tell your Representative and two Senators that you won’t stand by and let 30+ million people lose their healthcare — and that you expect that they won’t either.
